چکیده

We investigate the use of organizational alternatives that lead to more energy–efficient caches for contemporary microprocessors. Dissipative transitions are likely to be highly correlated and skewed in caches, precluding the use of simplistic hit/miss ratio based power dissipation models for accurate power estimations. We use a detailed register–level simulator for a typical pipelined CPU and its multi–level caches, and simulate the execution of the SPECint92 benchmarks to glean accurate transition counts. A detailed dissipation model for CMOS caches is introduced for estimating the energy dissipation based on electrical parameters of a typical circuit implementation (reported in [WiJo 94]) and the transition counts collected by simulation. A block buffering scheme is presented to allow cache energy requirements to be reduced without increasing access latencies. We report results for a system with an off–chip L2 cache. We conclude that block buffering, with sub–banking to be very effective in reducing energy dissipation in the caches, and in the off–chip I/O pad drivers.

An Architectural and Circuit-Level Approach to Improving the Energy Efficiency of Microprocessor Memory Structures

We present a combined architectural and circuit technique for reducing the energy dissipation of microprocessor memory structures. This approach exploits the subarray partitioning of high speed memories and varying application requirements to dynamically disable partitions during appropriate execution periods. When applied to 4-way set associative caches, trading off a 2% performance degradatio...

A Comparative study on the Role of Energy Efficiency in Urban Planning Instruments of Iran and Germany

In recent years energy efficiency in different levels become of prime importance. Studies have been shown that urban planning can play a critical role in this area. At the same time in oil-producing countries like Iran, energy efficiency has not been considered as a national priority. However, in recent years with increase in the population growth, rapid urbanization and acceleration of environ...

Static Energy Reduction Techniques for Microprocessor Caches

Microprocessor performance has been improved by increasing the capacity of on-chip caches. However, the performance gain comes at the price of increased static energy consumption due to subthreshold leakage current. This paper compares three techniques for reducing static energy consumption in on-chip level-1 and level-2 caches. One technique employs low-leakage transistors in the memory cell. ...

PhLock: A Cache Energy Saving Technique Using Phase-Based Cache Locking

Caches are commonly used to bridge the processormemory performance gap in embedded systems. Since embedded systems typically have stringent design constraints imposed by physical size, battery capacity, and real-time deadlines much research focuses on cache optimizations, such as improved performance and/or reduced energy consumption. Cache locking is a popular cache optimization that loads and...

Architectural and compiler techniques for energy reduction in high-performance microprocessors

In this paper, we focus on low-power design techniques for high-performance processors at the architectural and compiler levels. We focus mainly on developing methods for reducing the energy dissipated in the on-chip caches. Energy dissipated in caches represents a substantial portion in the energy budget of today’s processors. Extrapolating current trends, this portion is likely to increase in...
